Discover the Historic Naxos Castle (Kastro)

General Info

Naxos Castle (Kastro), located in Chora, the capital of Naxos, is a well-preserved Venetian fortress and a key historical site in the Cyclades. Built in 1207 by Marco Sanudo, it served as a protective shield for the impregnable Sanudo fortress. Materials from an ancient acropolis, including marble columns and blocks from the Portara, were used in its construction.

Location: Chora, Naxos Town

Naxos Castle (Kastro) is a historical gem, offering a glimpse into the island’s Venetian past. Its pentagonal fortification system and the iconic Trani Porta (“Great Gate”) are key highlights. The Glezos Tower, the last remaining tower from a complex of 12, stands near the northwestern gate and features the Crispi family coat-of-arms.

Restoration and Preservation

The tower was handed over to the Archaeological Service by Mr. Petros Glezos and is undergoing restoration. The plan is to create the largest Byzantine Museum in the Cyclades, displaying objects from the Middle Ages and Byzantium, including an extensive collection of detached Byzantine frescoes.
